About
On 29 January 2020 Delft University of Technology hosted a workshop on channel bed degradation, in close collaboration with NWO, NKWK Rivers2Morrow, and NCR. Channel bed degradation is one of the main problems that Rijkswaterstaat is faced with regarding the Rhine river. Also other heavily engineered rivers, such as the Danube, Elbe and Loire, suffer from channel bed degradation. Typical causes of such degradation are channelization measures of the past, sediment mining, and sediment trapping in dam reservoirs. Associated problems are, for instance, instability of structures, exposed cables and pipelines, affected freshwater supply. The unequal degradation rate between branches downstream from bifurcations changes the partitioning of water and sediment between the downstream branches, which in turn affects flood safety. The workshop included speakers from TU Delft, Deltares, Rijkswaterstaat, German Federal Waterways (BAW, BfG), BOKU Vienna, and an independent consultant:
