Utrecht University is proud to host the NCR DAYS 2026 which will take place on April 16 & 17 2026. The NCR DAYS provides a podium for young and established researchers and professionals, as well as MSc-students, to present their work on rivers. This edition, themed ‘Navigating Rivers’, intends to give a broad overview of river management and river research, from the Holocene to the Antropocene and from small scale particle tracking to large scale adaptation pathways.

We welcome submissions on the following topics related to rivers in the Netherlands and abroad:

  • Fluvial ecology
  • River morphodynamics and sediment management
  • Governance, policy and adaptation
  • Advances in hydrodynamic modelling and machine learning
  • Floods and droughts
  • Water quality and plastic
  • Hydrology and climate change
  • Ecosystem services or nature-based solutions
  • Historical reconstructions
  • Delta evolution
  • Channel-floodplain interactions
  • Monitoring and remote sensing

Conference programme & keynote speakers

Utrecht University is proud to announce the keynote speakers for NCR DAYS 2026:

  • Professor dr Rebecca Hodge from Durham University (UK). She is a fluvial geomorphologist with a particular interest in sediment transport
  • Dr Ignacio Peralta-Maraver from Universidad de Granada (Spain), who is a eco-physiologist studying freshwater ecosystems, together with Wilco Verberk who is professor of Functional Ecology from the Radboud University (NL)
  • Professor mr Marleen van Rijswick from Utrecht University (NL). She is professor of European and Dutch Water Law and the director of the Utrecht University Centre for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law.

Call for abstracts

We invite you to submit an abstract about your work. Abstracts with an academic and professional nature are welcome:

  • Abstracts that focus on novel ideas, methods or data, describe original research or provide a review of existing results or techniques. New ideas may be tested or demonstrated on case studies.
  • Abstracts that focus on discussing aspects, challenges and insights from practical application, that describe application of existing methods on challenging case studies and highlight knowledge gaps or directions for future research.

Please observe the following author instructions:

  • The deadline for submission is Monday March 2, 2026 12:00
  • Abstracts must be submitted in Word format (*.docx) or PDF (*.pdf) format
  • Abstracts must follow the prescribed template. Both Microsoft Word and LaTeX templates are available for download, see below
  • Abstracts have a maximum of 2 pages
  • Abstracts must be submitted to the following e-mail address: ncrdays2026@uu.nl
  • In the e-mail with your submission, please let us know your preferred presentation format (poster/oral). Note that we cannot guarantee placement according to your preferences.
